HIMSS 2014: An inside look at the largest healthcare IT event
I just wrapped up at HIMSS14 at the immense Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. (HIMSS stands for the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.)
This place was abuzz all week with 1,400 technology vendors and 36,000 conference attendees. Several event themes remain consistent year-over-year at HIMSS: EMR interoperability, big data, and overall patient outcomes measurement. Behind these themes are thousands of providers evaluating the ways health information technology can enable improved clinical care delivery and operational performance.
It’s within this spirit of technology-driven performance improvement that ShoreTel engaged booth visitors at the healthcare industry’s largest health IT event. It was clearly evident from our discussions that providers are evaluating a myriad of health information technologies to complement the improved access to patient data that their ever-evolving EMR platforms have provided. The ShoreTel team discussed and demonstrated how our UC solutions also enable efficient access to both information and distributed, mobile clinical teams.
There were many existing ShoreTel clients that walked by and hollered out that they loved their ShoreTel system or stopped to spend some time in the booth and check out our latest offerings. The ShoreTel Dock station was a big hit, as many had never seen it and were very excited to talk to their ShoreTel partners about ordering some units as soon as they returned to their facilities. Mobility capabilities, contact center, and conferencing were all popular discussions with visitors in the booth. There were also many new prospects that stopped by the booth to evaluate ShoreTel. Each of these prospects was exploring a complete system replacement of their legacy TDM systems. I was a bit taken back that in each case, none of the hospitals or large physician group practices were even considering upgrading their existing enterprise telephony system. They were all moving onto greener vendor pastures – or hopefully in our case, orange ones.
